پیش چشم شیر یک سگ را زدن

Fair things are soon snatched away

Belle fille et méchante robe trouvent toujours qui les accroche

A fine girl and a tattered gown always find something to hook them

دختر ناز و قشنگی یا ردایی ریش ریش

گیر خواهد کرد بر قلابی اندر راه خویش

Belle promesse fol lie

A fair promise binds a fool

دست یک بی عقل را یک وعدۀ دلخواه می بندد

Bien est larron qui larron dérobe

He is a thief indeed who robs a thief

او که از دزدی بدزدد واقعاً دزد است

Bon avocat, mauvais voisin

A good lawyer is a bad neighbour

یک وکیل خوب بد همسایه ای است

هرچه یک روز نکوتر باشد

کار روزانۀ آن سر باشد

He does a good day’s work who rids himself of a fool

او که با هر حقه ای از شر بی عقلی برست

Brebis qui bêle perd sa goulée

The sheep that bleats loses its mouthful

لقمه ای این وسط ضرر کرده

گوسفندی که وقت صرف غذا

از خودش بع بعی درآورده

Celui est homme de bien qui est homme de biens

A good man is a man of goods

مرد خوب اوست که مالی دارد

Celui peut hardiment nager à qui l’on soutient le menton

He may swim boldly who is held up by the chin

تا چانه اگر داخل آب است این مرد

بی باک و جسورانه شنا خواهد کرد

It is nothing at all, only a woman drowning

A coward often deals a mortal blow to the brave

غالباً بزدلی به شیردلی

ضربه ای سخت و مرگبار زند

Courtoisie qui ne vient que d’un côté ne peut longuement durer

Courtesy that is all on one side cannot last long

احترام یک سویه بی دوام خواهد بود

De court plaisir long repentir

From short pleasure long repentance

از آن لذتی کو زمانی نپاید

پشیمانی بس درازی برآید

De deux maux il faut choisir le moindre

زن می خرد شویی جوان تر

Twixt the word and the deed there’s a long step
